Ask Dr Ruth - Thursday 12 December - 6:30pm - $10
Charting the incredible life of Dr. Ruth Westheimer, a Holocaust survivor who became America’s most famous sex therapist.
During her long career Ruth became a champion of women's education. Now in her 90s, rather than retiring, she continues to talk, and encourage talk, about sex and maintaining great relationships between all genders. This documentary has already swept American and international film festival audiences up in its charms.
We discover that it is not just people that Ruth asks awkward questions of. As from the opening conversation between Ruth and her new friend, Alexa the know all app from Amazon, the audience quickly learns that she is guaranteed to ask frank questions of those around her, including the audience of her TV shows, radio, and now in the cinema - and for that alone this film promises an hour and a half of delight.
But of course there is also merit in watching how she fought and was supported to build up her role in a very conservative country, especially whilst at the same time taking down the stereotypes and taboos that were forced upon that society by hundreds of preceding years of generational dogma, delaying or restricting equality and happiness for so many.
Questioning is a trait of Dr Ruth Westheimer and one she encourages in others. So the people behind this film have now asked her why this is, and the answers will no doubt also be questions in themselves, and ones which you as an audience member may also reflect upon yourself.
